SHELL AND TUBE

The double-concentric-tube, sometimes known as the double-pipe, could be considered a simple shell and tube type with a single tube in a shell. The bundle of tubes in a shell and tube heat exchanger must be supported in some fashion within the shell so as to maintain the proper spacing for uniform and efficient heat transfer between the fluids. It provides maximum amount of surface for a given shell and tube diameter, and it provides for single- and multiple-tube passes to ensure proper velocity. The floating tubesheet allows for differential thermal expansion between the shell and tube bundle. The fluids in both the shell and tube circuits must be nonvolatile and nontoxic. There is a hot hydrocarbon gas at high pressure being cooled via cooling water in a shell and tube exchanger. Automated shutdown valves are often installed on the cooling water supply and return lines of shell and tube exchangers for the simple reason that they limit the migration of hydrocarbon vapor into the cooling water system in the event of a tube rupture.
